Lou Reed (Berlin) by Hans Veltman. Berlin is the third solo album by musician and composer Lou Reed, released in 1973. It is a melancholic album that tells the story of a couple, Jim and Caroline, through drugs, domestic violence, prostitution, masochism, child abuse and suicide. Berlin exposes the despair of incommunicability in love. When it was released, the album was not commercially successful, probably due in large part to the murderous criticism of Robert Christgau, a journalist at Rolling Stone magazine. Lou Reed, deeply hurt by the rejection of what he considers his most personal and accomplished work until then, sinks into bitterness.
