Part of my Asterism Series. This term refers to the "X" or "star" that appears when viewed - but doesn't exist in the painting. Influenced by Op Artists of the 60s and 70s. Wired for hanging. This painting was exhibited in the “Art of the State 2022” at The State Museum of Pennsylvania from September 11, 2022 – January 15, 2023. 1850 works were submitted, and 92 were chosen. It also was selected for the Gallery Choice Award, All Abstraction, 2022 International Juried Online Exhibition, July 2022. It was also included in the juried exhibition “Light Within” at MH Art Gallery 42 W Market St, Marietta. The show ran from February 9 through March 31, 2024. In September 2024, it was accepted into the Allied Artists of America’s 111th Annual Exhibition. This online show runs through Sept. 2025. Why does that “X” appear in my Asterism paintings? This visual deception is an example of simultaneous contrast. Simultaneous contrast, or the contrast effect, is a visual phenomenon where the perception of one color is affected by the presence of surrounding colors. Specifically, the brightness, saturation, and even the hue of a color can be altered by the colors surrounding it.

I create hard-edge, geometric abstract paintings and digital prints as a contemporary continuation of the Op Art genre. I am a colorist and find great joy in exploring the interaction of color. My work is an investigation of how colors can impart the impression of motion and depth, and how colors can evoke unique memories in each of us. My work relies on arrangements of shape and line, and the choice of precise colors that create structures, flickering, glowing, or a sense of perspective. I enjoy the role that mathematics plays in my work, and the process of layer upon layer of colors that are applied using varying widths of masking tape to create the final result — which is something that I can’t see until the last piece of tape is removed. I have been primarily influenced by the Op Artists of the 1960s and 1970s — especially Julian Stanczak and Richard Anuszkiewicz, as well as Bauhaus artist Josef Albers. I have been fascinated with the Op Art Movement ever since I bought a Vasarely poster at a psychedelic shop as a ten-year-old in the late 1960s.
