An up-close look at a more impressionistic style and illustration of how each tree has an individual character. This tree lived and breathed from regular shifts in the wind and sunlight during plein air painting. Gentle waves of air swirled the leaves every which way to expose the trunk and inner branches. The outer green leaves looked a light lemony yellow under the brightest rays.
"Painting the Arno River" (bottom left) is framed in a gold filigreed style for now. Also, grouping the Florentine series paintings fills a larger wall space and offers a complete memento of Florence's key landmarks. Though "Cypress Lane" (far right) is already sold, prints are available. (Ignore the canyon painting - that's part of my Southwest series. s althe city's landmark

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Anyone who has visited Florence, Italy, remembers it as one of the most romantic times of his or her life. For those in a gift giving mood -- be it for Valentine's Day, anniversary, birthday, Christmas, or simply as a heartfelt memento -- my landscape plein air painting series of the seminal locations and landmarks of the beautiful and stylish "cradle of the Renaissance" city might just be the lovely answer. "Painting the Arno River" is one of four paintings of my Florentine landscape series. These works were created during a month-long landscape painting workshop at the Florence Academy of Art. My series was executed in the school's more traditional style. For this painting, artists like my friend Maureen (pictured) and I were drawn to this Arno riverbank site for its composition potential. I went with the flow of lines of energy to unite this piece. Paths stretch forward. Fields reach upward. Trees curve inward into a figure eight-shaped frame that zooms in on the bridges and trees in the horizon. And, of course, "a river runs through it," to quote author Norman Maclean. I chose a more impressionistic and expressionistic style, similar to Van Gogh's approach, to build up the sensuousness and texture of my visual experience. The series also includes the Florence skyline ("Renaissance Romance") and another Arno riverbank location ("Falling Water"). One painting, "Cypress Lane," in the famed Boboli Garden, has already sold, but prints remain available. All are offered through . "Painting the Arno River'' is currently framed in a gold filigreed style. Hanging gear included.

Delivery Time:

I envision my oil paintings, sculptures, ceramics, and mixed media as I have embraced my writings as a world-class journalist: each piece is an adventure of striking dramatic impression. I fashion understandable images that combine realistic, representational, abstract, and Pop Art approaches. Within this framework, I quest for something fresh in subject matter and presentation. When conceptualizing, I ask: "What might make the work memorable? Can a story be told? What might provoke conversation?" Some responses: vivid rich colors and vibrating color contrasts (as inspired by Matisse and Van Gogh), chiaroscuro style (grazie to Da Vinci and Caravaggio), mirrored effects, humorous animal narratives (motivated by Matisse again), reverential animal narratives (divined from Chauvet and Lascaux cave art), comical concepts (thank you Pop Art), universal goddess imagery, and strong palette knife marks, energetic brush strokes, and textured effects using impasto and stucco to affect a permanent look and feel of landscape subjects, especially stone and rock. Born and raised in Chicago and currently living in San Diego after 30 years in Los Angeles, I am also a traveling artist inspired to plein air paint the romantic Renaissance skyline and gardens of Florence, Italy; the kaleidoscopic mesas of Abiquiu, New Mexico; and the sexual and sensual lines and shapes of the Death Valley dunes in California.
