An Australian landscape painter prolific in the 70s, 80s, Fred Williams made a huge impression on me early on. His gestrual marks, alluding to the vast spaces, the dry open land flecked with trees or what not, took me to outback places, long long drives to mimic his experience. It recalled for me a youth of similar drives, Australia, away from the coast, is a vast, dry and yet vital, colourful array of visions. I hope the viewer has a a sense of the passing view. I undertook these gouache studies on Arches Watercolour paper as a furthering of the plein air experience. I actually set up in a popular park close to home, with the road trip video across the outback and painted scene after scene for as long as the drive took. 8 hours. The process had me feeling the cold, the heat, the insects, the wind, the hunger, the impatience of plein air painting, with the uplift of being in nature, combined with the distraction of the passer-by. Without the tedium of the long drive, or having to stop en-route to capture the flash of the beautiful view. Conceptually this touches on our fast paced world and our yearning for something slow, something spacious.
