About The Artwork
This painting is part of a series called ‘Unfolding Future’, in which I was exploring the ideas of trust and guilt. Guilt's purpose is to try to 'protect' us from moving forward and taking the next step. So I began this series with an I Ching hexagram ‘Work on what has been spoiled’ and decided to start with photographs of my children when they were little. This was a part of looking at what I felt guilty about in order to get out of the cycle of self punishment and guilt. In this painting I used a photograph of my two boys and I was wanting to make the abstract element work more than the figures. I ended up obscuring most of the figures, if you look carefully you can see glimpses of their faces. I wanted to explore the feel of the connection between them as boys and how that has ‘translated’ into their futures.
