Quietly walking through town at night, leaving the day behind me, I occasionally come upon something quite unexpected. I often use cats for subject matter. This surrealistic painting grew over a period of years, eventually evolving into two sections; day and night. I wanted the viewer to see the floating cat outside the window calmly watching a boxing match between two costumed rodents that takes atop a fluted column inside the viewer's house. A salute to Marc Chagall and deChirico. I boldly adjusted one cat's ear with tape and pastel to enhance the composition. The contrail and cat's tail on the daylight, passive side, form an x mimicking the crisscross blows of the mice. The simplified, houses are reminiscent of buildings found small in Italian towns placed tight together with geraniums in the windows. The windows suggest eyes. Each part of the play has a job to do and can act independently. Like a collage of events not necessarily grounded in reality but in the same time frame.
