About The Artwork

My work is inspired by my love of fashion and clothing, and in this case wedding dresses, as I design and make them in my parallel life. The story of this dress is pretty romantic! My client had found a fashion design drawing in an unused attic room in her husband-to-be's home, dated 1937. This was thought to be her beloved's grandmother. My client imagined how romantic it would be to use most of the design elements of the drawing in her own wedding dress, and so did I. I produced a selection of design drawings, and the lady concerned chose her favourite. I then went through the process of taking measurements, making a pattern, making a toile(test garment), fitting, and then perfecting the pattern. The actual wedding dress was then made, and after two or three more fittings it was finished. After the wedding I asked to borrow the dress back to paint, as I'd had an idea that this would be a great idea for a wedding gift. It's a long canvas, as it was a long, slim dress....I hope that anyone viewing this painting will feel the sense of romance, and the delicacy of the silk satin fabric and the silk tulle veil. I chose oil paint for this painting, as it gives a feel of lasting quality, permanence, and a voluptuous depth of colour and tone. I wanted to paint the dress on it's own, on just a hanger, as this painting was meant as a celebration of the dress itself.

I have always had a love of fabrics and clothing, and in my parallel life as a designer, pattern cutter & maker, the fashion drawing and illustration process has always been important. Painting portraits of wedding dresses and other clothing, came as a natural progression. I have always carried on my artwork alongside designing and making, and I’d had an itch to make oil pastel paintings of clothing for a couple of years, but work always got in the way. When the wedding dress painting idea came up, I began by using oil paint on canvas for a more voluptuous look. Clothing has always been very meaningful to me for many reasons, and with the portraits I wanted to project an ethereal atmosphere, with a dramatic, theatrical edge through photo editing as a starting point. Having always used marker pens for my design drawings, I decided to try them as an ‘ideas’ medium. The results are graphic and simple, on smooth Bristol board, with a fresh translucence, almost like a watercolour. I have catholic tastes, and this is reflected in my work.
