About The Artwork

The sculpture comprises of three forms. One dimension is stated above, the other dimensions are as follows : h 4.5 w 18 x d 8 / h 6 x w 16.5 x d 11 cm. These were initially developed from hand drawn lines and shapes in my notebooks. Patterns created from the shapes were used to cut out the hammered flat organ pipe which is lead/tin alloy. The three hollow soldered forms were handmade especially for an international group exhibition 'A Shriek from an Invisible Box' at the Meguro Museum, in Tokyo, Japan. The work and title are derived from the history of the material and a sense of the past and the sound that the material is inherently imbued. Placement of each of the forms can be varied in response to the location. To create the silvery grey surface, every part was wire wooled and sanded to reveal actual unique note inscriptions and markings that give texture and a depth of age. Shapes cut out of the forms on either side allow both a sense of the inner spaces and a view through. The movements of natural light and shadow are important elements of this work in order to provide a reflective silence.
