Unspoken is a collection of portraits built on what is not said. A glance from behind a veil, a line of women standing in their brightest colors, a face caught between curiosity and reserve. These are encounters from my travels across Africa, Asia and Latin America, brief exchanges with people I met along the way. I look for the moment when a person stops performing for the lens and simply looks back. Often everything is in the eyes; sometimes it is in the posture, the fabric, the light falling across a face. I keep the compositions simple so that nothing competes with that connection. These portraits are not about places or customs. They are about presence and dignity, and about the silent conversation that happens between two strangers for a fraction of a second. Each work invites the viewer to hold a gaze, and to stay with it a little longer than usual.
