Paul Cooklin is a British photographer celebrated for his dynamic documentary, architectural, and travel work. His portfolio is defined by emotional depth, striking composition, and the interplay of light and shadow. Whether capturing a bustling metropolis, the quiet majesty of architecture, or the stillness of remote landscapes, Cooklin invites viewers into narratives that feel both universal and deeply personal.
From Pixels to Film
Before turning to analogue, Cooklin immersed himself in digital art in the late 1990s, when the medium was still emerging. He experimented with abstraction, geometry, and texture, creating bold, emotionally charged works. Licensed through Brand X Pictures (later acquired by Getty Images), his digital art appeared in five published collections and online showcases that connected him to an international audience. For Cooklin, those early years represented “a blank page of pixels” where anything was possible.
Everything shifted when his father handed him a Bronica ETRS medium-format camera. His first attempts were riddled with under- and over-exposures, yet the imperfect negatives revealed a tactile depth digital couldn’t match. What began as an experiment quickly became an obsession.
Film, he discovered, was liberating. Digital offered endless manipulation; analogue demanded intention, patience, and trust in the process. Cooklin embraced darkroom printing, drawn to the tonal richness of silver gelatin. “Film carries an honesty that digital couldn’t replicate: every frame a direct reflection of the photographer’s skill and vision.”
