Semih Çelebi was born in Istanbul in 1971. He is an artist who brings together traditional Turkish woodcraft techniques with a contemporary and distinctive approach. By masterfully combining wood carving, inlay, naht, marquetry, and fretwork techniques, he developed his unique artistic language known as NEVA Art. This art form conveys not only the natural texture of the material but also layers of time, culture, and thought through a multidimensional structure. For Çelebi, wood is not merely a material to be shaped, but a living medium that speaks through memory, history, and meaning. NEVA Art emerges from this philosophy, forming an artistic language that carries three-dimensional thought with technical expertise and conceptual depth. His works balance material, meaning, and aesthetics, integrating symbolic and intellectual layers within physical ones. His creative process begins with the careful selection of different types of wood and continues through precise layering, carving, and inlay techniques. Light and shadow interplay within the compositions, while surface patterns and transitions enrich the visual texture. These dimensional structures, “casting shadows of their own,” reflect the strength of traditional craftsmanship while offering a modern visual narrative. Çelebi continues his artistic work in his own studio, where production and education come together. Beyond individual creation, the space also serves as a center for training young artists. In addition to technical skills, the philosophical essence and conceptual dimension of NEVA Art are emphasized, transforming the act of making into a mindful and reflective practice. Through solo and group exhibitions, Çelebi has contributed to the recognition of NEVA Art. His works focus on a dialogue with wood that emphasizes simplicity, naturalness, and layered thinking. His artistic vision does not merely present physical depth but invites the viewer on a journey between past and present, surface and meaning—offering a rich aesthetic and intellectual experience.
