Stuart Dodman is a British artist based in Brighton whose practice spans painting, drawing, installation, and sound. Working across these forms, he explores the act of making as a space where gesture, repetition, and doing produce histories of labour, failure, and endeavour. At the heart of Dodman’s work is a concern with how marks and materials carry time, memory, and importance. His drawn paintings evolve through the layering and erasure of surfaces, allowing forms to emerge through accumulation of marks while reducing material. Paint is applied, carved back, reworked, and sometimes scraped away entirely—leaving behind a residue of past attempts that informs new ones. While his work moves fluidly between media his main output is painting, often in series, which is rooted in the physical and psychological implications of mark-making, how every action leaves a trace, and how those traces are permanent. Dodman’s practice invites viewers into a visual and spatial language built from repetition, disruption, and return. What results is a body of work that asks what it means to make knowing that each decision, even when reversed, still leaves something behind. Dodman holds a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Sheffield Hallam University. Alongside his visual art, he has worked with sound and object-based installations, with projects released internationally. His work has been exhibited in the UK and internationally and is held in private collections in the USA, Mexico, Canada, Europe and the UK.
