A native of Georgia, I did not originally pursue a career in art. I was formally introduced to the art world when I learned bronze casting in Thailand in 2000, and I've been sculpting ever since. I'm drawn to animals and mostly focus on bats and burros, both misunderstood animals.
BATS: Bats are a favorite subject. I'm inspired by their quiet contributions to our lives, their faces, habits and elastic wings. They need our empathy and understanding. Sometimes I sculpt them realistically, other times, people-like. When I combine their traits into human form (anthropomorphic), it helps people identify more with this unusual subject. I find that sculpting delicate, sensitive bats in heavy, permanent bronze is a testament to my commitment to them. The best way I can help to raise awareness about their difficulties is through my work as an artist.
BURROS: Burros are considered merely "beasts of burden." Often mis-treated, they do so much for cultures around the world yet the level of abuse towards them is heartbreaking. Both comic and tender, they deserve our respect.
Some of the finest quality bronze comes from Thailand. I apprenticed in Thai foundries steeped in centuries old bronze sculpture traditions. Technically, I learned how to create waxes for the molds, how to finish the bronzes and how to chemically patinate or "color" the bronzes. Learning how to actually sculpt in clay however, is a lifelong pursuit but a journey I'm proud to be on.
My sculpture can be found in galleries and public installations in Shanghai, Taipei, Connecticut, Florida, Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, and California. Recent awards include First Place at the Coconut Grove Art Fair in 2018 for Sculpture, and Selection for installation at the Grand Rapid Museum for Art Prize 2018.
