Born: Suffolk, 1974Lives and works: Hackney, LondonEducation: Leeds Metropolitan University, Fine Art BAThe forms in my latest work are influenced by maps and aerial photography. These visual references are the starting point for a systematic building of a structured surface using oils and acrylics, from which an image is revealed through the controlled removal of paint. As the paint is stripped away, the skeleton of the painting emerges, the network of lines becoming increasingly interwoven and intricate. The textural aspect that has been such an integral part of my work has, for now at least, been replaced by a fascination with the story of the surface and the revelation of the painted strata that make up the history of each piece. The element of chance has come to play a vital role in the success or failure of each of these archaeological paintings, as long-hidden elements of a piece slowly emerge as the layers are stripped away.
