Paul Hooper

Paul Vernon Hooper, born in Durban in 1963, currently lives and works in Rosebank, Cape Town, and is married with three children. Paul turned professional artist in April 2020 after spending his working life helping to bring relief to vulnerable women and children whose lives and futures had been decimated by the Apartheid regime. This long and fulfilling spiritual, emotional, even political quest saturates his art.
Paul’s drive to help the less fortunate started with his experience as a conscript medic in the Angolan war in the early 1980’s, and the human rights violations he witnessed there. As a Jesuit brother for a number of years, Paul worked with the victims of the Natal Midlands killing field’s civil war, the youth in prison in London, the street children of Hillbrow, the Youth of Soweto, and the street children of Cape Town.
