Narayan Plasha is a self-taught artist who explores a range of traditional themes in an effort to engage awareness, soften distinctions and form a channel between Nature and an intuitive inner-vision. He seeks to express the non-linear and concentrate on the natural abstraction of forms through contrast, fragmentation, juxtaposition and isolation. His use of media is discriminate and varied. Works on canvas are done only in oils. Works on paper involve the use of a singular medium or a self-developed technique of layering mixed media, which may blend pencil, charcoal, conté, gouache, crayon, watercolor, acrylic paint and oil pastel, together on a piece of heavy watercolor paper. Other works on paper develop as mercurial shifts between two or three mediums exclusively, and, of course, the choice of the paper itself is a defining element in the overall aesthetics of a work.
Raised in Pennsylvania and currently residing in Vermont, Narayan was exposed to a world of cultural diversity since childhood. He has been producing art inconsistently since 1998, however, after establishing a home-studio two years ago, he has become prolific in his creation of new work while maintaining a day job as a carpenter/craftsmen.
