The paintings by Ovidijus Talijūnas echo Japanese calligraphy with their subtle lines, controlled style, and careful selection of few colors. In several compositions, the author uses black embedded with pastel areas within, resulting in an impression of stained glass. It is as if light bursts out from the depths of the canvas, sulking through a layer of colorful glass.
The painter's works interpret tradition in a contemporary manner, at the same time spawning an archaic atmosphere achieved using amulets and hieroglyphs of an unknown language. The aesthetics of written language are highlighted clearly: one can observe relicts of Braille, magazine cutouts and so forth. And even though these works are quite abstract, they're fairly associative, provoking the imagination, and bringing guidelines of possible interpretations to the front. The materiality of the paintings can almost be touched at times, whether it's realized through massive, monumental shapes, or using brush strokes as effortless as a summer breeze.
