About The Artwork

“Circe’s Garden“ is a series of 12 animated digital collages loosely based on the myth of Circe in the ancient epic poem “Odyssey” by Homer. Circe is a sorceress living in a remote island, a secluded paradise. When Ulysses and his crew arrive there, she uses magic and turns them into pigs, to keep them in the island forever. These digital artworks are symbolical. Circe represents Nature and the island is earth, a remote magical paradise in the universe. Nature rules over all living creatures and disobeying her laws elicits strict punishment. In this case humans disrespect the laws of Nature and end up dead, their abandoned helmets and items are strewn around the island. Circe is represented hiding or sleeping, a symbolical view of the powers of nature hidden till aroused. The series also hints at the struggle between male and female existence. Circe, a sorceress does not follow the rules imposed by society on women, therefore she is a symbol of the power of femininity and sexuality. All landscape photographs are taken by the artist at the Peloponnese area in Greece, near ancient Olympia. The items portrayed in these digital collage series are created by the artist or are found objects especially photographed for the above artworks. The small sculptures incorporated in the collages are made out of plasticine or metal papers.

I live and work in Athens. Iam a painter and printmaker. Most of my work deals with feelings and emotions. The center image in most of my pictures is the human body from which all feelings and emotions radiate. Color is not always realistic. Space is also manipulated in order to convey a special emotion and feeling. Most objects portrayed in my artwork have a symbolical meaning. My favorite medium is the monotype. Through my monotypes I express my ideas and then turn them into paintings. In my solo shows, I try to create an environment for the visitor, combining painting, printmaking and video. I love art and the unexpected discovery of beautiful artworks, thereforeI I curate exhibitions and document the Greek art scene on YouTube.
