A Woman Sees Her Self and is Unafraid Drawing

This piece is part of a new series of drawings inspired by feminist themes in colored pencil on heavyweight black paper. I've always felt like I had a dragon inside me. She's been growing my whole life, feeding on every suppressed feeling I carry around in my guts. She eats my indignation when my abilities are questioned, she slurps up my pride every time I under represent myself in pursuit of virtue "humility" and she curls up to sleep in a bed cushioned with pent-up lust because "men prefer to make the first move." I wonder if other women have dragons inside them, beasts that feed on our suppressed feelings. I've backed off from opportunities because I was afraid my assertiveness would be perceived as overambitious or greedy. I've stayed home, feeding the dragon my boredom and loneliness rather than risk the unknown dangers of going into the night alone. I've changed clothes before openings over and over, trying to reach some imaginary ideal look that will ensure guests are interested in my art and not my body. Do other women do these things? What if we could pull the dragon out, and look at our ambition, desire, anger, selfishness, sexiness, pride, and hurt? What if it wasn't as scary, or evil, or vicious as we thought? What if those aspects of ourselves were every bit as much a part of us and worthy of love as the rest?
