About The Artwork

"I'm going to be a mermaid." My friend said this to me, totally serious, as she was dropping me off at my parent's house. We were both eighteen, not really grown up, but still adults, and I thought she was crazy. I had just told my parents I was going to be an actress, but here was my friend, wanting to be a mythical creature. We stayed kind of close for a while, but I changed my major and she got busy with life, and then one day I saw her online, and... SHE WAS A MERMAID. In the water, with a tail, smiling and beautiful and everything she said she wanted to be. She is probably the most magical person I know. Not because she encountered a sea witch and had her wish granted, but because she had this one impossible goal for her whole life, and she made it happen. How many dreams did I discard because someone told me they would never come true? What would I be today if I had believed in myself the way she did? Can I reach back through time to support my younger self and regain that lost confidence and potential? As a kid I was never into unicorns and princesses, but now, whenever what I want seems too hard, or out of reach, or just not destined for me, I think of mermaids. And I try. This artwork was featured in my exhibition, "GRRRLS Like Us" at the Cherry Hill Village Theater in Canton, MI

I've been living in Detroit for ten years now. Lately I've been doing historic window restorations in houses mostly, I like it. I'm kind of between things artistically right now, I just wrapped up a show of feminist colored pencils. I'm mostly taking a break to just show those drawings around and get back to working on my fundamentals until I know what I want to do next.
