About The Artwork
This work was inspired by the curled and damaged leaves littering the ground in winter which I find beautiful for their twisted shapes and elegant decay. The intentions was to create an almost abstract still-life based on a loose arrangement of these leaves and twigs, with intricate overlaps, shadows and juxtapositions. Using ink appeals to me as I enjoy the flow, the option to use brush, pen or stick to apply it, the strong tonal contrasts it offers as well as the contrast between lines and areas of tone. I hope that viewers will find the image intriguing in its own right as a tonal composition with strong marks and suggestions of insect life perhaps, not purely as a realistic image.
