Avelar expresses a divided allegiance between comedy and pathos, material and invention. Avelar’s impotent brushstrokes minimize the sense of dispirited dialogue between the portraitist and the universe, depicting humor and irony in every gesture. An installation made from two pieces. The portrait is the half of another piece, an orange plexiglass that creates a reflection. "Media Naranja" is a Spanish saying that means my other half. Naranja means orange.

Mexican-born artist based in Brooklyn, New York. Marcela Avelar’s work explores the politics of association by challenging the framework of self-identity through perspective and context. Avelar’s quasi-realistic , mixed media technique creates subtly altered expectations of separateness and singleness, daring the viewer to question conventional frames of reference. By inviting a secondary viewpoint, she blurs lines between the essential nature of the individual and the collective. Profile Image by Mikaela Gauer
