My work focuses primarily on how I am representing my subject rather than the what. Elements which are consistent in my work contain loose, expressive brushwork, and a sense of linearity. There remains an atmospheric sense of tranquility, the passage of time, and mortality through the harmony yet tension contained within the art. I create cropped scenes with firm compositions of intimate and isolated moments meaning to be contemplative. The intimate compositions tend to portray interiors which to me represent a sense of time away from nature. Humanity spends much time indoors in shelters either for work, leisure, or rest. In a sense, interiors make up a large portion of identity within our lives. The paintings are centered on the aesthetics of interiors and celebrating the design and relationships we have with spaces. The figures in the works interact with their space using their body language. First, I render the concept with a drawing study, then I start off my painting with a linear sketch of magenta oil paint, in order to have the subjects pop out a little more towards the audience. As the painting develops, I experiment with imaginative colors and tones. There remains a sense of movement within the painting through linear marks and focused, controlled composed space. The sketchy and painterly application of the paint along with the metaphorical themes help shape the purpose of image-making in contemporary society. Through intuition and improvisation, the drawings and paintings flow freely, without restraint.

Biography: Michael Athanasius Hanna is a painter, draftsman, writer, digital artist, and curator originally from Jersey City, New Jersey who has been creating art since the age of eight. He has exhibited extensively in the United States and has been featured in large exhibition spaces such as the Victoria Gallery in Paterson, New Jersey and the Atrium Gallery in Morristown, New Jersey. Notable shows in New York City include a solo exhibit in Chelsea at the Wix Gallery and a one year exhibit at Hogarth Worldwide in midtown Manhattan. Michael has been published by Saatchi Art, the New York Times, Hartford Courant, Daily Record, Jersey Journal, Ypilson Art, and other publications. Michael works out of his art studio located in North Georgia and has been serving as the curator of Aedra Fine Arts, an art publisher and online gallery, since 2014. Artist Statement: The art reflects an interpretation of surfaces broken down to forms of linearity and spatial forms. The two-dimensional works are presented as if peering at close up surfaces, landscapes, and objects through electrical interference and pixelation. I try to execute my drawing, paintings, and digital works to appear as if the viewer has been trekking through a lightning storm or watching a distorted film on a broken television or computer. As an artist living in the digitized contemporary era, I interpret various forms of visual communication through media in a distorted and post-minimal fashion. In an age where visual stimulation remains abundant, my work focuses on the subtle texture and surfaces often ignored by instant and impulsive sensory experiences. The art focuses on examining deeper sensory observations as if visualizing a heightened awareness through surfaces broken down to basic components. Through linearity, shapes, shades, and hues, the artworks are executed in extreme angles, perspectives, and a sense of sfumato (smoke). My focus pertains to the reexamining of sensory experiences in regards to heightened awareness through digitization, pixelation, and electrical interference, thus creating new interpretations regarding the purpose of image-making in contemporary society.
