About The Artwork

This is actually 3 attempts at a painting. I hung the first attempt in the front stairwell about 3 years ago, just for someplace to put it as we have space issues. I had to pass it every time I came in and went out. It bothered me every time. Finally, I took it down and started over. After a few days, I was still unhappy with it, so I rotated it a quarter turn from the horizontal position to vertical. Originally it was a painting of a Centurion about to throw a spear. After a disappointing effort to salvage that idea in the vertical position, I started roughing out a head at the top of the painting with no thought about identity. The head seemed to want to be a female so I gave in. The Centurion was gone and the female emerged as Jezebel. Jezebel was, of course, a wicked woman in the Bible. Her name has come down to us today as a derogatory term that some use to denote unsavory qualities of a woman they disapprove of.

I spent my working years as a Creative Director and graphic artist in advertising. I have painted off and on a little over the years but never really got in a gallery or did many shows. But now I’m painting seriously. My approach is often to discover something, without any preconceived ideas. Many of my canvasses get painted over or thrown away because I don't like the direction. Once I start and find the direction, I’m on my way. I do not have a style, I'm not sure I want one. I'm greatly influenced by the work of others, but I want my painting to take me somewhere I’ve never been. I like to discover and be surprised by what comes out. But for me, there is a risk of throwing something away before I realize it has value. I have to live with it for a while.
