Aggression Painting

This painting was undertaken with interest in exploring the nature of fear and violence. I wanted to set up a somewhat vague and obscure scenario in which a violent confrontation appears imminent, though nondescript. This ambiguity is meant to facilitate questions rather than attempt at answers, and allow the audience imagination to flourish. The large figure in the foreground appears to be the aggressor, yet we can't say for certain, his visible hand is plainly open, empty, and at ease. We are left without definition. The small opposing figure strikes a fearful, defensive posture while looking outwards toward the viewer, who necessarily becomes an inclusive figure in this scenario, bearing a question of responsibility. It becomes unclear whether the supposed victim addresses us in despair, seeking help or in fear of harm. The foreground figure appears almost as an apparition; the large expanse of semi-translucent space created by his shirt allowing him to dissipate. I imagined this large expanse as a transitional space into reality, through which the viewer can enter.
