About The Artwork

My work is about losing myself in the rhythm, texture, and movement of the art and connecting with the shear physicality of the materials to create something transcendent, dynamic, and harmonious. This piece, in particular, was inspired by the sense of timelessness I experience in the studio (a profound experience of the now, with no beginning and no end) and by the intense connection to some primal power that is beyond my day-to-day self, that I experience while creating. This piece started with a layer of plaster mixed with sand that I applied with a series of palette knives and other tools. I then applied oil paint and encaustic wax with brushes and dripping techniques to create forms and gestural lines that animate the underlying textures. The wax is then fused to various degrees with a heat gun to create passages of bubbling and flowing textures that contrast with the roughness of exposed plaster passages. I hope it helps you connect to the same place of transcendent power that I experienced when creating it.

Ashton S. Phillips is an interdisciplinary artist based in Los Angeles, CA, working directly with the earth, water, pollution, taboo, and repair as primary materials. He is interested in the wisdom hidden within the material environment, including our physical bodies, and in the promise of queer ecological praxis, interspecies collaboration, and experimental “play” as pathways for making meaning and sustainable being in the late Anthropocene. www.ashtonsphillips.com
