Ships in a Crate
Early in 2014 I visited the Vienna exhibition in London and saw a painting of Amalie Zuckerlandl painted by Gustav Klimt between 1917-18. One of his last great portraits. She was a glamorous society hostess, a gentile married to a rich Jew, one of Klimt's circle. In 1942 she was arrested by the Nazis and died in April that year in Belzec an extermination camp in eastern Poland. I felt very upset when I saw some information about her arrest on the card next to the painting and left the exhibition. I looked her up on line and saw a small black and white photo of her taken in 1939 when she looked frail, scared and alone. It seemed in ghastly contrast to the life that she'd led. I don't know why her wealthy family failed to rescue her.
