America Painting

The painting depicts an overhead view of a garbage dumpster, the frame of the dumpster essentially frames the painting, and inside are bags of trash. A closer look reveals a child's hand buried within all the garbage. This hand identifies a vague, but familiar sort of tragedy - a child thrown away (literally) and more generally, human life consumed and discarded. There is a direct correlation between the child and the corporate identities and consumption represented in the trash itself. I see this painting as a commentary on our business-run society, one which places profit ahead of people. It also references the perverse consumer mentality bred by a business dominant society that allows for such trampling of life. The painting is titled America, but I don't intend it to read as a criticism of America the country. It's more a commentary on the supposed ideals America is supposed to stand for.
