About The Artwork

This large, dynamic and textured painting was inspired by the sunrise over a calm and peaceful morning sound, ocean-side. This time of day seems so peaceful on the surface, but below the water's edge, the fish and wildlife of the sea are busy working for their daily food. As I worked, I was "hearing" the slapping patterns on the water's surface and "seeing" the swirls of currents as the fish work for their food. The canvas is loaded with paints and mediums; a mixture of polymer emulsions, acrylic paints and inks, as well as utilizing various tools such as scrapers, brushes, palette knives, self-sanded wooden boards and my hands to apply the colors. There is a lot of texture here! One may call this an "action painting", though the subject is reduced to a moment in time and a place of peacefulness and light. The active sea life that carries on "beneath the surface", is but a metaphor for our own busy days as we go through this wonderful life. I think it is evident that my love of the ocean and nature was a major form of inspiration as well. My wish is that the viewers will relish in the "feeling" of this abstracted waterscape and be mindful of the moments in everyday. This piece is wired and ready to hang. The 1.5" side stretcher bars are painted in a neutral gray.

The world around me is anything but predictable, so how could my artwork be any different? As an artist I feel bound to reflect the world around me, and cannot help but absorb the "inputs," before dropping them right back into my work. Life is really just one everchanging adventure, and my hope is to embrace it with a truthful and objective eye. With a BFA from East Carolina University, and a lifetime of visiting museums and galleries around the world, I am constantly inspired to explore a variety of painting application techniques. My intentions in painting will forever be motivated by a truth...that certain connection between the subject and its content of the work.
