About The Artwork

Life and death are ugly but make a stunning piece of art Kristie L. Smith Nikitin, freelance writer and art enthusiast “No one is getting out alive,” Artist Kris Gebhardt said. It’s true, from the moment we are born, we are all going to expire. Gebhardt has a distinctive window into the soul of the dying. The fitness author and consultant has worked closely with the most critical cases, those who have exhausted medical treatment options. The unlucky ones told “get your affairs in order.” Bucket List and 20 Pounds of Curses are two works of art that floated to the surface from the depths of his psyche. Haunting and gritty, like many Gebhardt characters, these two have a certain misery about them. Emaciated and drawn faces, they are fading away before our eyes. In Bucket List our guy is dragging a large pail. It’s full of hopes, dreams and experiences he so desperately wishes to have. He’s fighting for time while clamoring away from the flames of hell. Even more sobering is the story of 20 Pounds of Curses. For such a brief painting it speaks volumes. The words are packed with meaning and “shout” agony as they hover over a gray, ashy painted cardboard, that’s been taped and tacked to old crate-wood with rusty nails. “Air in the veins,” a disturbing thought, referring to what’s left when the blood and nutrients are gone. “Sunrise, sunset, you taste salt the closer you get,” claims made by those in their last days. And the 20 pounds of curses is the approximate weight of the bones when the flesh has withered away. Gebhardt isn’t afraid to shock or offend. Not about beauty but truth, these paintings share his unique perspective. Life and death are ugly sometimes but they still make for a stunning piece of art.
