This seascape evokes a sense of light and space at low tide. Very few separate pigments are used. The sky is predominately modern pigments of Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold, Pyrrol Red and Iridescent Copper. The blue is purely a version of Paynes Grey named after William Payne a water colour painter who died in 1830. The other pigments are the ancient earth pigments of Raw Sienna, Raw Umber, Burnt Umber etc.

I have been painting for many decades but have only recently exhibited to a wider public. Previously, exhibitions and sales were at my home and garden studio on Shoreham Beach. Formal artistic education since school started with the Aesthetics course at university and since then continued with lengthy one-to-one contact with artists who have developed specific techniques. The canvases mainly inhabit an area in the interstices between pure abstract and representations of landscapes and seascapes. I aim to create an area in which the viewer can easily develop an individual interpretation of a scene or atmosphere. Hence, my art is more evocative than representational. Important aspects are depth and variety of texture, purity of colour and luminescence. The nearby sea and the ever changing sky above it which are visible from the window have provided a constant inspiration.
