Ships in a Crate
Stern foremost hauled; no mark of onward speeding ship, Stern ward she comes as vessels do, When sailors turn the helm. On entering harbor; all oars backwater, Gliding backward to anchor she comes. - Greek Poet Aratus on the constellation Argo. So it is in the sky over Cat Island the giant constellation Argo is seen, in the white of the milky way with tattered sails from storms of life, backing slowing into calmer waters of refuge. Argo means a company of travelers - Canopus, its leading star means "The Possession of Him who comes" The star Asmidiska means "the travelers released" and the star Sephenia means "abundance". And so between spending their nine lives the cats and kittens come to their refuge - for rest, for fun, for rejuvenating ... a sort of cat heaven. I think our heaven is similar if not the same. A place of rest and love. A place of abundance and fun. A place of recuperation and rejuvenation. Other constellations in the painting are: The Southern Cross is on the horizon - above it and lying across it is the dual nature Centaurus (whose Greek name is Cherion the pierced). In the high sky to the left Corvus the raven attacks Hydra that wicked snake of old and then Crater the cup of God's wrath poured on Hydra too. The brightest star in the sky is Sirius meaning sir or prince is also known as the dog star ... to me it represents Linus, Maron, Brick and Bella and Puppy. The cat cautiously entering heaven is Jelly, Gunter is the gray cat, Enid, she, now with white paws, the great hunter of butterflies and of course Patrick, Creampuff and many others are there too.

Konar's work is both light and dark in subject, approaching at every turn both the whimsical and the mischievous. He uses the canvas as a stage to capture moments of love and heroism, as well as times of human folly. His characters come from real life, from songs, from poems and from stories. All the stories take place under a starry sky with the drama of the constellations. Unexpected details are presented through the book on a shelf, the image in a mirror, the wallpaper pattern, an individual leaf, and many other visual gestures waiting to be unlocked by the viewer. His technique of using glaze upon glaze creates colors that are deep, rich and vibrant. There is a profound sense of mystery, nuance, symbolism and timelessness in the scenes he depicts. Of his process Konar says, "I work mostly in oils and the progress of each work is slow and sometimes tedious - my oils are built with glaze upon glaze, and detail upon detail. For me technique and investment of time are always subservient to achieving the final effect in the painting. I'm driven by and find my greatest satisfaction in what I create as a final work and not the process." Other artists have dubbed him "the storyteller" and have said that his paintings "speak to the soul". Matt & his wife Denise presently enjoy living in Grants Pass, Oregon where they enjoy visits from their children and grandchildren, and being in the midst of God's great northwest creation. 'Jesus in Blue Jeans' was awarded Best of Show in PlacerArts 30th Jubilee 2013 Open Juried Show. 'Ship of Fools' was also in the show.
