About The Artwork

My work has always been about the importance of place in shaping and defining one's identity. I've utilized maps and mapping symbols in my paintings and drawings for quite some time. Collusion is a canvas first covered in a USGS map of the Darfur region (coated with acid free acrylic medium to safely protect from the oil paint) and painted with sand and acrylic, then oils. This painting is part of the group of works that dealt with the situation in Darfur, Sudan and the overwhelming degree of displacement and deracination, not to mention loss of life and general chaos, imposed on the area and trying to make some sense of it. Collusion refers to the relationship of China's government with the government of Sudan: arming them with the ability to continue the brutality against their own people.
