‘Whatever you fear most has no power – it is your fear that has the power’. - Oprah Winfrey Courage is finding the inner strength and bravery when confronted. Deep within each of us courage resides and is ready to forge ahead or break through insurmountable barriers. As I awoke melancholy from a dream I realized I was reminiscing of loved ones who have passed on. For many years I blocked this painful emotion and buried it deep into my heart. For each year that I tried to dismiss it, the pain would resurface even stronger. I needed to bring my fears to light to loosen their hold with the hope of being able to banish them. In order to confront my fears I allowed them to surface and expressed them in a painting. The raw emotions of sadness, anger and loss were interpreted with the erupting volcano, fire, violent winds and water. Gradually I was able to free myself from the shackles of fear in order to create a life of peace. The statue was photographed in the Musée d’Orsay during our trip to Paris. The sculpture by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827-1875) representing The Four Parts of the World Holding the Celestial Sphere was completed in 1872 (H 280 cm or 9,2ft; W 177cm or 5,8ft). The four allegories are dancing in a ring. Europe (not seen in this painting) scarcely touches the ground, Asia is seen from the back, Africa is facing us and America, wearing a feather headdress, has her body turned to the side. The reference to the abolition of slavery is also visible in the statue: America is standing on the broken chain of slavery wrapped around Africa’s ankle.
