About The Artwork

Nennius relates a tale whereby Brythonic Keltic King Vortigern, fighting his enemy, retreated to Snowdonia where he proceeded to build a fort. Daily he built, and nightly the fort collapsed. This continued for some days, 'til he consulted his wizard, who advised him to find a boy with neither mother nor father, and bring him to be sacrificed. Vortigern's men sought high and low, both east and west until, without the walls of Carmarthen, they found one such. Duly he was brought before Vortigern but, before they could carry out their sacrifice of him, he said he knew why the fort always fell down. "Betwixt the hills", said he, "there is a lake. And if that lake be drained, there you will find a kistvaen - and within that kistvaen are two dragons set to fight eternally. If the dragons be freed, then one will win, and the fighting will cease. But mark you", he continued, "one dragon stands for your people and another for a foreign invader who, through your own negligence, you have allowed a foothold in your land. The winner between these dragons will foretell the winner over your destiny".

Painter, composer, sculptor, poet, writer and press mogul. Petrol head, political animal, subversive, genius and legend. Pagan, historian, keeper of the Sacred Flame of the Old Ways and occasional table (well, sometimes the drinks are on me. And sometimes they are all over me...) My art is generally driven by a desire to relay the mythological and history as it relates to the Prittanic isle; so while Titian may paint "The Rape of Europa", Sebastiano del Piombo "The Death of Adonis" and countless other old Masters plunder ancient Graeco-Roman and Egyptian mythology, my muse is far closer to home - amongst grossly neglected ancient British pantheons, in fact. Thus, when you see Ceridwen, the Goddess of Inspiration, chasing down Gwion Bach, you can be inspired to chase down the story to which it relates. I put flesh on the story of Boudica, warrior Queen of the Iceni and very nearly vanquish of the Romans but for a slight but fateful tactical error; so while her mortal remains may never be discovered, unless someone decides whether the platform of King's Cross or the crossroads further up-country retains that glory, we may at least have something of her likeness. But also I have work on the go which are just bits of mental flotsam rendered in oils, including a humorous one which, well, can you see what it is yet?. Of course, not all art is rendered in either oil, acrylic or watercolour. Where my muse bids me, I will sculpt, compose or write. But obviously these meisterwerke are not necessarily the province of this site.
