Edgar Degas self-portrait from the series of 17 Grand Masters, are all self-portraits that I have painted again The French painter Edgar Degas is famous for his paintings of ballet dancers, which he painted from 1867. He is counted among impressionism. This is mainly due to his participation in the first groundbreaking exhibition of the impressionists in 1874 in Paris. The artist, however, preferred to see himself as an independent artist, independent of this movement. During his career he increasingly worked in the style of realism. His education was based on the style of neo-classicist Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres.

My name is Anthony van Gelder, born in 1945 in Zalk, The Netherlands. In 1969 I started to study at the Free Academy of Arts in The Hague. Four years later I went to the academy of arts in Rotterdam. Since 1972 I have worked as an independent artist from my studio in Schiedam. In 1980 I moved to Flayosc in the south of France. It was an inspiring place for painting. Later on I also started to work as a photographer for advertising agencies in Paris, Nice, Cannes and Marseille. In 1986 I went back to Holland and opened my studio for professional photography in Schiedam. I have worked for various companies and advertising agencies until 2010. After some years I started painting again. At present I am living in Vlaardingen, a small city close to Rotterdam. What I enjoy most is painting landscapes "plein air", as is shown in my work. But I also love to work in my studio.
