About The Artwork

This work belongs to "Structures" series created between 2004 and 2007. Hiper abstraction. Structures come from a constructive conception of space. In the very beginning, the only purpose was to balance the surface of the painting with rough lines interrelated or connected in a casual manner. In the end, these have ended up being the real structures as they are now. At that moment, I was trying to let my speech go and leave as a result, mere lines and links that could transmit pure sensations. During that creative moment of mine, I needed some intellectual relief after such deep “synchronous episodes” and what they meant. The structures then acquired corporeal nature when atmosphere appeared between the different levels of construction. The paintings are then exhibited in presence of the spectator with the intention to challenge them and take part of the atmosphere that was put together in the work. At this point, the scales are of deep importance, because they will influence on the ones contemplating them in a very different way: Big formats involve and affect those looking at them, while the medium ones test them, making them to participate from their essence. The little ones seem to be supplying experiences as if we were just looking at our family photographic album. As we contemplate this work memory takes us to Piranesi prisons, those awesome and huge constructions, solid and dark, where the spectator dreams to escape from them through such complex hollows. In Spite of my work on these paintings without any discursive desire, as the time goes by, I have to admit that these pieces, emerge as the reflection of a real situation dominated by the limitation in many areas. The impossibility appears full frontal, but at the same time, it invites us to assault it, evade it or even trespass it. This work is in full force now thanks to the crisis we´re immersed in. Besides this restricted component, it transmits hope.

www.placidoromero.com I was born in Malaga, Spain, in 1961. Since 1996 I live and work in Barcelona. Painting for me has always been my learning tool, through painting I´ve connected with the background knowledge. For a long time, I´ve extrapolated what emerges from painting itself to grasp life events. In turn, phenomenology was the inspiration motif for what it would later come in return. New methods and new understanding open doors to new processes, thus providing feedback. I´ve put my capacity to analyse to the duty of deciphering, whatever those images were telling me. They were always beyond my expectations and the things they hid, always much more deeper than I expected. My philosophical grounding is based on that idea. Attention: I´ve always thought this was the true fact. Now I´m evaluating it because I sense I´m getting closer to another way of understanding and explaining this artistic phenomenon. www.placidoromero.com
