About The Artwork
Ezinne means "beautiful woman." The subject of this photograph embodies three kinds of beauty revered in the Nigerian woman. Pictured in a field, Ezinne carries a large calabash, which shows that she is hardworking. At the same time, she wears gold earrings and the ceremonial coral beads worn in traditional Igbo weddings, thus displaying the beauty of a new bride. Ezinne's stomach appears somewhat round, but her beads prevent the viewer from knowing for certain whether or not she is a mother. Nevertheless, the potential for motherhood adds to Ezinne's radiance, depicted clearly by the rich yellows of her skin which mirror the sunset light behind her.
