Fable Painting

This painting explores the myth of the suburban lifestyle. It suggests a desire for more meaning, and an implication of escape. Hopefully it suggests a little humor as well. The dollhouse refers to the falsity and pretension of the suburban lifestyle, how inhabitants are watching each other, and observing themselves in anticipation of others' judgements. The model of a home plays on the idea of a "model home." Aren't many of us "playing house" in our adult lives? Fulfilling roles that we believe we are meant to? The man in the painting wears a fox mask, which implies wiliness, and also refers to the character of Nick Bottom in A Midsummer Night's Dream, who wears the head of an ass through much of the play, and similarly acts in a "play within a play." I put this man in knickers to further suggest the Shakespearian era, though obviously the socks and t-shirt are modern. This style of clothing could look a little threatening in a nicer neighborhood, so this man is creeping along like some kind of theatrical criminal. The word "Fable" pulls it's weight as a title here; it refers to moral tales involving animals, and it also means an untruth.
