This painting is currently on exhibition at the Elmhurst Art Museum outside of Chicago. Selected by curator Kelly Shindler, Associate Curator of the Contemporary Art Museum Saint Louis for the Midwestern edition of New American Paintings. Later selected by curator Staci Boris for the New American Paintings exhibition at the Museum in Elmhurst. This work is fresco and mixed medium on reflective beveled panel. The panel rests on a 3" deep inverted panel that radiates a bright cadmium red - pink aura. My paintings are a personal declaration aimed at ameliorating our modernity. When I paint, I compose visual anthropological essays that bridge past and present for a contemporary acculturation. The colors and symbols I use are adopted from many stations ranging from old folk traditions to street art. Further manipulation re-contextualizes them as both graphic ornament and Esperanto. Initially, these paintings were organized according to open-source graphs describing patterns of social human interaction. They have become a way for me to filter the urgency and collective scramble of contemporary life. The physical presentation of the work appears to hover from the wall as if supported by a colorful light. The fresco medium lends it self to natural imperfections and a primitive quality or perhaps a natural sense of urban entropy. I use acrylics, powdered pigments, and spray paint. Some areas are scraped and sanded while others are worked round after round developing a spirited sense of archeology.
