I am interested in the debate surrounding climate change and how it is affecting landscapes. I started reading about the history of landscape and how it is formed. Landscape has a language which can be read I discovered through 'The Language of Landscape' by the landscape architect Anne Whiston Spirn. It is written with the eye of an artist and the mind of a scholar and revealed many things about landscape through time to me. I come from near Carlingford Lough in Ireland. On one side of the lough are the Mourne mountains and on the other the Cooley mountains. One range of peaks is glaciated and the other is not. One side is smooth and rounded and the other jagged. In one view you can see the journey of time. I used to work only in oil until I was asked by another artist working beside me who suffered from asthma if I would mind considering another medium because the the fumes from my turpentine exacerbated her condition. With a degree of resentment I did to acrylic but after a while I began to I appreciate the advantages of acrylic and it led to an entirely new method of working for me.
