About The Artwork
J. Emmett integrates a life long practice of following lines in the Following Lines Series, where he imparts his mind chatter onto his panel and follows what he is attracted too. As he does, forms and shapes pop out, helping to inform what he follows next. Through a series of marks and strokes following lines and chasing shadows, inevitably, a form of a person or multiple people present themselves. This can be an overwhelming experience for J. Emmett as he can not escape the feeling that these faces are coming through him for some reason. J. Emmett finds beauty in these forms and intentionally leaves them underdeveloped in order not to inform the work and to let the figure present themselves to him. J. Emmett hopes that viewers will be just as captivated by the forms suggestion as he is.

Artist Statement Within my practices I intend to articulate beauty as an inherent quality in all forms - even the seemingly grotesque - as a means to honor life and to challenge harmful, systemic ideology. I explore various concepts through my artwork and sometimes the hardest concept to explore is self and the expression of self. Regardless of conceptual center, I aim to strip down pretense and show up as authentically as possible to each piece. I hope to be challenged by my work and that it antagonizes systems that capitalize off of unconscious living. I am looking for a connection to something deeper, a truth to feel confronted or comforted by. Connection is my center and whether it be my paintings, woodworking or sculpture practices, building a relationship to and understanding the materials I work with is imperative. 2 Fun Facts: I am looking for personal and collective liberation and some of my best friends are dogs.
