Frangipani Painting

I ended up in Cyprus during lockdown. There’s an interesting story to all of that which has already formed a small book/catalogue which accompanied my solo show, of work I produced on a one year Residency there, between 2020 and 2021 - “Odyssey, An Artist’s Journey” . Arriving at fairly short notice from a rainy wet Scotland to a balmy mysterious night, with a one way ticket was a real adventure. So too was where I lived, in the setting of Cyprus College of Art, at that time, completely unique like no other -to be cast adrift in this timeless place, it’s basic and rustic disposition a stones throw from modern life yet surrounded by a small jungle like enclave of exotic overgrown trees, nature in full swing on one’s doorstep, was to be in a world away. And Otherworldly is definitely something which finds parallel in my own work. De Cirico, Magritte, Bosch, Rousseau - artists with a profoundly individual sense of inner space - living on the edge of the night. Van Gogh too of course was often in my thoughts, so much so that I delivered a short gallery talk on my thoughts about him, to the 508 Gallery in London. The Mediterranean light, the exotic, the exuberance of colour, the light, the sun and spending so much time out of doors, my studio being literally plein air in a courtyard . And for me the most spell binding part of the day was that last hour or two of day light, as the ancient sun swung slowly from a burning gold to crimson lighting up the land. Looking a these paintings now they represent a transformation something that goes beyond words but where words might fail the paint tells the tale. Though I say it myself, they have a special glow, a warmth that reaches deep inside.
