About The Artwork

The Hindu elephant god Ganesha is shown in a traditional pose. The picture is full of symbolic meaning which can be researched online. For instance, the ax in his right hand allows him to cut himself free of earthly ties while the rope in his left hand connects him to higher things. The hand resting on his knee offers a blessing. His trunk is sucking at a sweet dumpling, sweet things being the reward for a good life. The mouse represents something like appetite and is under his control. There is a story that he broke one of his tusks to make a pen at a vital moment in his life story. (There may be other interpretations.) I spent January 2015 in India and this painting is one of the results.
