About The Artwork

Very soon after the death of George Floyd, before I'd heard much about it I happened to watch the whole video showing his arrest and murder, beginning to end. Needless to say, it deeply affected me and for reasons I can’t fully express yet, I wanted to paint it. Throughout my life I've mostly tried to paint and photograph beauty in some form. I wanted to explore the feelings I had as I watched that video. This scene is ugly and violent and it makes me nervous and unsure to share it, not knowing what people will think. Perhaps my reason is to create something that expressed my anger and sadness from watching such brutality. It's abhorrent to me. Perhaps it's motivated by the deeper sadness and realization of the undeniable fact that this sort of injustice and violence has been going on for hundreds of years. Maybe I, a privileged white man of 50+ years, while perhaps somewhat "woke" is having a deeper awakening. I'm not sure at this time but I was compelled to paint this. Hopefully it speaks for itself. The systemic and overt racism and violence must stop. These systems we have, both in physical practice and in our thoughts must be destroyed. When I was a kid I wrote in my journal that I thought Humans / Humanity had great potential for good but we must overcome our animal instincts and selfishness to attain our true potential. #blacklivesmatter #painting #8:46 #GeorgeFloyd #StopKillingPeople #BLM

I'm a Photographer and Painter born in Pueblo, Colorado, USA (1966). My father was a landscape architect and my mother, a teacher and librarian. Both of them practiced creative arts and crafts outside of their professions. Mom has painted for as long as I can remember and Dad always has some new or continuing creative interest he's working on (drawing, painting, stained glass, wood working...). I have one older brother and one younger. While growing up in the 70's and 80's we lived in a couple small towns in South Central and Southwest Colorado, Del Norte and Cortez. There was one short stint in Vermont when I was 2 or 3 and another in Northern California when I was 9 years old but both times we came back fairly quickly to Colorado. I started my obsession with photography in high school. I was very inspired by Ansel Adams at that time. After studying photography and graphic arts at college in Flagstaff, Arizona I moved to Seattle, Washington where I've lived for 32 years, mostly working in commercial and editorial photography. I am an artist and always have been. There are many other artists who have influenced me over my career. Ansel Adams, Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz, Gregory Heisler, Patrick Demarchelier, Albert Watson, Elliot Erwitt, Georgia O'Keefe, Andrew Wyeth, Ed Mell, and many more. In painting I am mostly self taught except for a handful of classes and workshops I've taken over the years and whatever I absorbed from my mother and grandmother in all the time I watched their painting. My photography was learned through years of formal training in high school and college and tutelage while working with over 100 different photographers when I was a freelance photographers assistant... that and a lot of practice and perseverance over 35+ years. My art photography is mostly nature inspired though I often think I should try creating more figurative work from time to time. Maybe I'll change it up one day... you never know.
