Styled after 16th and 17th century Dutch portraits, this painting depicts a person wearing a boll weevil mask, with their body wrapped up in a cotton boll. The style was chosen both as a personal challenge to myself and as a means of giving the image an aesthetic of authority, importance and tradition. The boll weevil is known as the scourge of the south because of its destruction of cotton crops. The viewer should come away with a feeling of unease, which the title should reinforce. One should be left with the impression that the figure in the painting may be looking back at them as both the hungry weevil and the cotton crop, both the provision for self-sustenance and the force which takes in away. The title is derived from the song "Counting Bodies Like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drum" by A Perfect Circle. The piece is acrylic on Ampersand gessobord.

I have always been fascinated by visual narratives; over the years I have amassed a large collection of childrens’ books. I remember with great detail the stories and songs my parents told at bedtime each night, and the imagery that I would create in my head to accompany them. I remember an otherworldly vividness to them, and even if they were only in my head I could recreate them even now, many years later. Even now those same stories seem like magic to me. I want to be able to convey those feelings to others. Unlike traditional visual narratives, I try to evoke in my work the feeling of having just missed or preceding a narrative scene. In this way, I hope to engage the audience in co-creating a story, rather than telling it to them.
