About The Artwork

Eye-catching composition of small residential homes by the Pacific. Feeling of harmony, quiet and warmth. Painted on a hardboard panel, the picture is NOT ready to hang. French author Bernard Dato has written about this painting. His remarks in French are followed by a translation. As always with William Buffett, the painting “Hermosa Beach “ is a very sensorial image. You can feel the temperature of the air, you can smell the sea spray, hear the wind in the plants and the sound of the waves. William Buffett, for a long time - and it is confirmed in all his musical paintings - , by the contrasting interplay of geometric and lyrical forms, by the ratios of meticulous patterns and uninflected planes, knows how to make our senses vibrate. But “Hermosa Beach “ doesn’t just transport us to a place: this painting is also philosophical. In the lower half of the frame, houses tend towards geometric abstraction (triangles, rectangles, diamonds, etc.). If the plant in the foreground, as well as the car, have more “natural “contours, the colors of the houses are “graphics“ (flat areas without shades). Everything, therefore, proceeds from an abstract tension. In the upper half of the frame, on the other hand - that is, the sky - , the mode is not abstraction but realistic figuration. The shapes are almost photographic and the colors are this time “pictorial “ (very nuanced shapes). How to reconcile, in the same image, and without the opposition being noticed, abstract and figurative, graphic and pictorial? This is the role of the two black-trunk trees, which connect the two halves of the frame. The trunk is graphic (flat of black, like the colors of the houses), but the foliage of the palm is rather shaped, nuanced: it proclaims and prepares the realistic treatment of the sky. It makes the connection. With this sky made of realistic clouds, which are constantly changing, we are with Heraclitus, the Thinker of Change, and with these houses of pure eternal geometric shapes, we are with Parmenides, the Thinker of Being. These two presocratic philosophers have often been opposed...William Buffett succeeded in reconciling and uniting Heraclitus and Parmenides: a visual and philosophical tour-de-force! A graduate of The Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, William Buffett has sold his work all over the world. He is known for his tropical townscapes, featuring palm trees and glimpses of the ocean. As a native of Southern California, he represents these landscapes in a delicate and sensual way with subtle colors and intuitive compositions. After formal training in the arts, he moved to New Orleans to see the jazz players and hear their music. The painting of jazz musicians is his true passion and he seems to capture the sound of the music in his dynamic paintings. A world traveler, he has visited Europe, Mexico and the Far East studying the great art collections. He enjoys success as a portrait painter, designer and printer of limited edition serigraphs and as a widely distributed poster artist, in addition to exhibiting and selling his original paintings. Today his work is in the collections of universities, corporations, and private individuals in America, Europe, Australia and Japan, as well as many islands in the Caribbean and Pacific. He presently lives and works in Nashville, Tennessee and is married to the well known abstract artist and interior designer Brenda Buffett.
