About The Artwork
Light, joy, fulfillment, happiness, bliss, contentment, sunlight, warmth, radiance, freshness, Wisdom, treasure, the sacred inner journey. These are words and ideas that come to mind with the yellow and gold combinations which are very present in my work at this time. In my studio making the large yellow and gold painting 'Joyful' I felt extreemly light and happy, it was as though the painting painted itself, rather than me having to make any effort, as though the energy moved through me with great ease. On seeing the painting for the first time, my dear friend said 'sunflowers' and it struck me that she was right! And that this painting brings to mind Van Gogh's beautiful sunny sunflowers, he was indeed my favourite painter when I was a teenager. Today I feel interested in a vertical format and the idea that the viewer might stand infront of the canvas and really feel the energy of the vibration of the colour, with his or her full body and connect to that colour field. Its important for me too that the work might really stand on its own and move the viewer in some way with a feeling, an emotion, in a visceral way, without any explanation being necessary.

Born in Johannesburg, I have also lived in Hong Kong and Sydney, and my present home is in Lyon,France.Colour has been my focus for many years. Expressing an inner experience and my inner universe through colour is what I am interested in. The scale of my work means that it can be an immersive experience for the viewer,and the scale gives me a sense of freedom and excitement,like going on an adventure, a journey of discovery. Colour is my subject matter, its accessible and sensual, a universal language that everyone can understand. Some works are directly inspired by music,for me there is a very intimate connection between sound and colour, both are vibrations. I love the sensuality of painting, the texture and body of the oil paint. I love the studio, the solitude, the process of making, the texture of the canvas and smell of the turpentine,the brushes.When I am in the studio I feel I am home,that I am truely alive, that I am myself.
