Mesquite/Mt. Charleston 1 Painting

I was driving back to Las Vegas from a job in Mesquite, up near the Utah border. I had some canvases with me and I wanted to capture an impression of the landscape. I drove off the highway and parked under some power lines. I wanted to see if I could get some energy. I made spontaneous wet renderings of the Joshua trees that were all around. A few days later I was up on Mt. Charleston cutting out paper figures of trees and animals. I used these cut outs as stencils to overlay the tree images over the Joshua trees. The energy of nature is very important to me. I react to the location spontaneously and I often incorporate physical traces and imprints from the location. Stylistically, there are two distinct types of paint handling: the wet, inky backgrounds, and the alla prima foreground images (trees). Each was painted at a different time and place, and each has its own visual syntax and expressive quality. This gives the painting a subtle tension and sense of visual dimension. These are painterly ways of capturing the mystical essence of a place.
