I am motivated by the relationship we have with animals, both the future and the past of this strange attraction and revulsion. I feel positive that more countries are passing laws to permanently protect animal rights as well as human rights, but we have a sorry history of exploitation and inhalation towards animals. The source image for this painting is from a 60s annual about animals in a zoo, the aggressive teeth bearing stance of this monkey is typical of behavioural images made over the decades of incarcerated animals, firstly captured in the name of entertainment, now in the name of conservation. There isn't any single issue that is so important now as how we plan to treat the 'others' in society, animals, other people who are different, disabled, marginalised or just plain poor. Monkey scream is painted in oil onto a found piece of MDF and is un framed intentionally) and can be hung with an eye screwed into the back as MDF is 2cm thick.
